Idea generation 💡

When I was deliberating whether to write a blog or not, I was very concerned about how I would come up with enough topics to talk about.

Marketing god Seth Godin has written over 7,000 blog posts. He blogs everyday! If he can come up with that many posts — yes, he has incredible knowledge and experience, idea generation can’t be that hard, can it?

Think of an idea! Come on, do it! 🤨

Brainstorming when you are under pressure is not conducive to coming up with gold.

My idea topics generally occur one of two ways.

The first is when my consciousness is drifting. Exercising, in the shower, dropping off, that kind of time.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve told Siri to set a reminder whilst out running about a topic forming in my mind. I’m terrible at remembering ideas so setting a reminder for later on is important.

The second is during a conversation.

We often take our own knowledge for granted but there are many people out there who would love to know what we know. If I find I’m explaining something or discussing something then that to me is a potential blog post and noted down.

The key to a good idea 🔐

However you come up with potential topics, the most important thing is to log them, even if not fully formed yet. I guarantee you will forget them if not written down.

I have a folder in Notion (formerly a google doc) with a page for each idea that I have been curating for over a year. There I can add any notes, links or potential headlines.

And they just sit there. Some topics are good, some not so good, but they are a bank of inspiration for when I need them.
